Summer Science Requirements
1) You will need to buy a bound composition book for science fair and start journaling over the summer. I will be collecting your journal for a grade the first week of school. I will be looking for you to have a minimum of 15 dates and entries recorded. Remember….your journal is for brainstorming and documentation. Make sure you date the top of each page then take notes. You will need to write in blue or black ink…..not pencil. Do NOT rip out any pages in the journal. Make sure you write on the front of the page only.
2) Your 15 entries should relate to brainstorming, choosing a science fair topic AND research.
3) For your topic, if you find an experiment online or in a book, you cannot copy it exactly as found. You will need to change the experiment to make it more effective. You will also need to include a bibliography for the source.
4) For research….you will need a minimum of 5 sources. Only 4 can be the Internet. For each source make sure you write a complete bibliography….either APA or MLA format. For each source you should write down a minimum of 15 facts that you learned from that source (If you cannot find enough information in one source, it is ok to pull those facts from a 6th source). Remember the more research you have documented, the stronger your project will be.
5) Please do NOT begin any experimentation without contacting me first. There may be rules you must follow, extra aperwork you must complete, and/or specialized labs you must work in. You may email me at sweat_j@firn.edu for guidance and/or approval to begin an experiment.
6) Please refer to the rules found at www.floridassef.net. I will also help you with understanding the rules, just email me with questions.
7) Parents CAN help you by suggesting a topic, helping locate a qualified scientist to work with (if needed), help gather research materials, check over forms and journals. Make sure that you, the student, do the actual work.
8) Projects that involve hazardous chemicals and devices, vertebrate subjects, human subjects, or microbiology projects require a LOT of paperwork and review by an IRB board before you can begin testing. Please be aware of the commitment you will be making if you choose a topic related to any of these areas.
9) PLEASE contact me with any questions. I will be in classes this summer, but will check my email every evening.
HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!
